Heat's Williams gets a lesson
Point guard Jason Williams emerged from the locker room after Monday's practice with a compact disc and a homework assignment.
The disc contained plays from recent games, when Williams either passed up open shots or did not attack the basket in pick-and-roll offensive sets.
It was supposed to be visual evidence of what coach Pat Riley has been saying all season: Williams needs to be aggressive for the Heat's offense to become more productive.
''Maybe I just don't see the opportunities,'' Williams said. ``I've got [the film] right here in my hand. So I have to see what's going on.''
The hope is that a night of film study leads to an evening of progress at the position in Tuesday's game against the visiting Bobcats. Williams and backup Smush Parker have struggled offensively and are shooting a combined 33 percent from the field and 26 percent from three-point range.
Their shooting woes have been highlighted by the return of Dwyane Wade, who has facilitated the offense late in game and has looked for others to knock down open jumpers when he draws extra defenders.
`Hopefully, we can just let him know that when he's scoring and when he's attacking, we're a much better team,` Wade said of Williams.
Riley said he has no plans to move Dwyane Wade to point guard on a regular basis because he doesn't want to wear out his leaders scorer. Another reason, Riley said, is that he still hasn't given up on Williams or Smush Parker.
''I still have confidence that our point guards can be productive,'' he said.
WRIGHT AND WRONG
Riley was in no mood Monday to explain why he benched forward Dorell Wright after just three seconds Saturday at Orlando.
Asked about the quick hook, Riley reminded reporters he also briefly benched center Shaquille O'Neal just 58 seconds into a victory at New Jersey for a blown defensive assignment.
''I'm not going to discuss it,'' he said. ``You saw it for what it is.''
