Watching The Brackets
Let the madness begin. When the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament tips off, millions of people will constantly check the scores to see how their brackets are fairing. While March Madness is a tradition that bonds people together, it also hits businesses bottom lines.
JR Runkel, president of Fortner Insurance, is one of the estimated 23-million people who will fill out a basketball bracket. In fact, he just does not have one; he has five.
“Some of our clients they end up faxing over and say hey, do you want to be part of our pool, get involved. It's just fun filling it out,” said Runkel.
As the president of Fortner Insurance he is not too concerned about lost productivity in his workplace, even though there is a bracket competition going on in his office. A Chicago-based consulting firm estimates companies could lose more than one billion dollars during the next several weeks. People focus more on the tournament and less on work.
“Two or three hours of the past 24 hours has been spent putting together and faxing them out to different friends around that nation,” said Paul Lindsey, a basketball fan.
That is nothing compared to how much time people could spend watching games online at work for free. CIProud.com will allow people to watch the games via the Internet. People do not need to panic about getting caught by their boss. Just click on the "boss button" and suddenly a spreadsheet pops up.
“It's one of the most exciting events. You have no idea what's going to happen and for crying out loud, a dog could do picks in brackets and maybe even beat me. I've known college basketball for years and years and years,” said basketball fan Keith Sutherland.
