Playing with Kidd appeals to Lakers
EL SEGUNDO - The Los Angeles Lakers remain interested in acquiring point guard Jason Kidd from the New Jersey Nets, but the deal has only a very remote chance of happening, according to team and league sources.
The Los Angeles Lakers are willing to trade Kwame Brown, Chris Mihm, Aaron McKie and a couple of draft picks for Kidd, sources said, but they won't part with Kobe Bryant, Lamar Odom or 19-year-old center Andrew Bynum.
To make the deal work for Kidd, who makes $18,084,000 this season, the Los Angeles Lakers would have to come up with no less than $13,563,000 plus $100,000 in salaries to send back to the Nets, per the collective bargaining agreement.
The Nets have not been enamored by the Los Angeles Lakers' offer, sources said, and the Los Angeles Lakers might need a third team to make the deal work.
Sources said late Tuesday night that the Los Angeles Lakers and Nets had not talked that day. The NBA trading deadline is noon (PST) Thursday.
"I do know that if something is not done in the next two days, there won't be a trade, 'cause it usually takes 48 hours to get things going," Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "Wednesday is kind of like a key day one way or the other."
The Los Angeles Lakers, who meet the Portland Trail Blazers tonight at Staples Center, would like an upgrade at point guard from starter Smush Parker. They like rookie Jordan Farmar, and a team source said Farmar's name had not come up in the Kidd discussions.
Kidd, who turns 34 next month and still is due $41,100,000 over the next two seasons, averages 14.3 points and 8.7 assists a game and would be an upgrade at point guard.
"All I'm hearing is rumors of Jason Kidd," Kobe Bryant said. "I think when a name like that comes across the table, you have to take a look at it."
Kwame Brown said he spent the All-Star weekend in Georgia and was unaware of the trade talks.
"We don't get the news down in Georgia," Kwame Brown joked.
Kwame Brown has missed the past 23 games with a sprained left ankle and probably will be out another month. Kwame Brown ran some Tuesday at practice, but he said he was still in pain.
"I'd rather that I'd be healthy right now so that I can at least stand up and show that that wouldn't be a good idea to trade me," Kwame Brown said. "That's nothing that I can control. That's nothing that I'm going to worry about."
The Whole Story?
Vladimir Radmanovic stuck to his story Tuesday that he fell on a patch of ice Saturday while in Park City, Utah, and that's how he separated his right shoulder. Radmanovic will be out two months, meaning he should be back the last week of the regular season in April.
"We have a lot of injured players, and for me, it feels like letting the team down," Radmanovic said.
Jackson joked that the team might need Pinkerton Security to investigate whether or not there is more to Radmanovic's story.
"We have to believe that our boys are being honest with us in this situation, right?" Jackson said.
More Los Angeles Lakers Notes
Jackson said he hasn't talked to Los Angeles Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak about Scottie Pippen's desire to play again with LA. Jackson said Pippen, 41, who has been retired for almost three years, "can still play."
Luke Walton, out for 11 games with a sprained right ankle, won't play tonight.
