Warriors go out
Three new players were on the court in crunch time after a leg cramp knocked Baron Davis out of Monday night's game with 4:44 remaining, and despite a gutsy effort, the makeshift lineup couldn't stop a 108-103 loss to the Lakers at Staples Center.
"We're still growing," said newcomer Al Harrington, who tied his season high with 30 points. "Obviously, you can't just put us together and have us win every game. ... We have to get to know each other and at some point, we have to make a stand with where we go with the ball."
Without their floor leader in Davis, the Warriors couldn't get any good looks in the final two minutes.
A minute later, the Warriors were down 105-101 when Stephen Jackson and Jasikevicius combined for another turnover on a broken play. Smush Parker raced downcourt for a layup to seal the defeat.
Harrington showed exactly why Warriors vice president Chris Mullin has been chasing him the past six months.
He had nowhere to go but up after his 4-for-21 shooting performance Saturday night against Cleveland, and where he went was inside, again and again. Harrington drove right at the Lakers' interior defense, which was nonexistent on this night.
While Bryant led the Lakers with a game-high 42 points on 11-for-22 shooting from the floor (including 4-for-7 from beyond the arc) and a 16-for-19 night from the line.
Bynum added a career-high 15 rebounds.
All eight of the Warriors' fastbreak points came off steals and every starter had at least two except Jackson, who had at least one deflection. The Lakers then committed turnovers on three straight possessions early in the second quarter, and the stunned Staples Center fans made their displeasure known with a volley of boos.
Davis, meanwhile, missed his new teammates' debut on Saturday because of a suspension, and he left Monday's game after his left leg cramped following a turnaround jump shot.
"Every time I tried to go back in, it started cramping up again," said Davis, who said he should be available for Wednesday night's game against the Nets. "It's just painful. I just didn't think I'd be able to make any moves."
