LA enjoys a period of growth
SAN ANTONIO - There were all sorts of signs Wednesday night of growth from the Lakers.
There was the victory over the always-tough San Antonio Spurs, 100-96, before 18,797 fans.
There was the toughness the Lakers showed when their 10-point lead slipped away against a Spurs team many figure will compete for the NBA title.
There was the Lakers doing this with starters Lamar Odom (sprained right knee) and Kwame Brown (sprained left ankle) back home in Los Angeles.
Lakers coach Phil Jackson, in many ways, poured water on all that, saying, "Let's not start patting each other on the back quite yet."
Perhaps Jackson was right, but the Lakers deserved credit for staying the course and for following the lead of Kobe Bryant, who scored 34 points, handed out eight assists and grabbed six rebounds.
"We're happy for the win," Jackson said, "but we're not going to crown ourselves yet."
The Lakers have beaten the Spurs twice this season, but this one was special.
The Lakers won this because they didn't fold when their 83-73 lead in the fourth turned into a 91-90 deficit.
The Lakers dug down on defense, coming up big when Smush Parker stole the ball from Tony Parker right after Bryant had turned the ball over.
After opening a 96-93 lead, Luke Walton found Ronny Turiaf cutting down the lane and passed him the ball.
Turiaf scored on a 6-foot bank shot over Tim Duncan (26 points, 9 rebounds) for a 98-93 Lakers lead with 9.9 seconds left.
"We grew up a lot tonight because down the stretch we almost let this game slip away because they raised their intensity on us," Bryant said.
