LeBron, Cavs trip Kingsr
LeBron James scored 34 points in the arena where he made his NBA debut
in 2003, and the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied in the second half for
their eighth victory in nine games, 108-98 over the Sacramento Kings on
Tuesday night.
James started slowly but scored 24 points in the second half as the
Eastern Conference leaders erased a 17-point deficit with a 31-9 run in
the third quarter of the opener on their seven-game West Coast road trip.
James then awed the Arco Arena crowd with three 3-pointers -- each
longer than the last -- in four possessions early in the fourth to put the
Cavaliers ahead to stay. Former El Cerrito High School star Drew Gooden
added 21 points and 11 rebounds for Cleveland.
Mike Bibby scored 26 points for the Kings.
Grizzlies 128, Lakers 118: Pau Gasol had 25 points and 13 rebounds,
Mike Miller scored 14 of his 25 in a record-setting third quarter, and
host Memphis beat Los Angeles. Memphis outscored the Lakers 46-22 in the
third quarter, including 13 unanswered points over a three-minute span.
The 46 points was a Grizzlies franchise record for points in a quarter.
Memphis led by as many as 24 in the fourth as starters Kobe Bryant, who
led the Lakers with 25 points, Brian Cook and Smush Parker sat on the
bench for the final period.
Suns 113, SuperSonics 102: Shawn Marion had 29 points and 15 rebounds,
Steve Nash added 27 points and 11 assists, and Phoenix beat Seattle for
its seventh straight win. The Suns overcame career bests of 29 points
and 21 rebounds by Nick Collison to hand the Sonics their fifth loss in
a row and 12th straight defeat on the road. Phoenix, with the longest
active win streak in the league, took the lead for good with a 16-2 run
at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth.
Mavericks 108, Jazz 105: Dirk Nowitzki scored 38 points, including two
free throws with 10.2 seconds left, to help visiting Dallas beat Utah.
The Jazz had three chances to draw even in the last minute after Josh
Howard missed a layup and two tip attempts, Devin Harris threw a bad
pass, and Nowitzki inexplicably drove for a layup and missed before the
final buzzer. But Utah couldn't convert any of its last-minute 3-point
attempts. Dallas' Jerry Stackhouse was ejected after getting called for
his second flagrant foul. He also was hit with a technical in the first
half for an argument with Utah coach Jerry Sloan.
Spurs 98, Blazers 84: Tim Duncan led a balanced attack with 16 points,
and San Antonio beat visiting Portland. Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker
had 14 points apiece, Brent Barry added 13 and Bruce Bowen scored 12
points -- all on 3-pointers -- for the Spurs. San Antonio opened the third
quarter with an 15-4 run to take a 66-48 lead.
Pistons 98, 76ers 89: Tayshaun Prince scored a career-high 33 points
and Richard Hamilton had 22 to lead visiting Detroit over Philadelphia.
The 76ers played without Chris Webber, who sat out officially with foot
and ankle injuries, but the former All-Star could be on his way out of
Philadelphia with a contract buyout in the works. He's missed 10 of the
last 13 games.
Nets 101, Raptors 86: Vince Carter scored 32 points and Richard
Jefferson added 21 to lead host New Jersey over Toronto in a matchup of the
top teams in the weak Atlantic Division. Carter was forced to leave the
game late after being poked in the eye. The Raptors' starting five
combined for 29 points, with T.J. Ford and Rasho Nesterovic going scoreless.
Pacers 91, Hawks 72: Al Harrington scored 18 points and sparked a 14-5
second-half run as Indiana beat visiting Atlanta. Harrington, who spent
two seasons with the Hawks before returning to the Pacers, scored 14
points in the second half after shooting 1-for-8 from the field in the
first half.
