Pat Riley Named Hall of Fame Finalist
Al Jefferson poured in 22 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 99-90 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, at the Target Center.
Ryan Gomes chipped in 19 points for the T'Wolves, who have alternated wins and losses the last five games. Rashad McCants had 16 points and six assists. Kirk Snyder and Craig Smith ended with 14 and 11 points, respectively, while Marko Jaric grabbed 10 boards in victory.
Corey Maggette tallied 34 points, on 9-of-18 shooting from the field, for the Clippers, who have dropped four in a row and six of seven overall. Tim Thomas ended with 22 points, while Cuttino Mobley and Josh Powell had 10 apiece.
Three points from Smith and a three from McCants put the T'Wolves up 74-66 less than 90 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Thomas then had a pair from the foul line, but McCants and Snyder added buckets for Minnesota to give the T'Wolves a 10-point lead.
Minnesota's lead hovered around 10, ballooning to as large as 11, and not dipping below seven points, the rest of the way.
The clubs were knotted at 23 after 12 minutes of play.
Minnesota took a 47-44 lead at the intermission thanks to a Randy Foye three- pointer with just over 20 seconds on the clock.
"We started making shots, Maggette was making some shots, for the most part," Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy said. "Tim Thomas was giving a good low-post game. In the second half we let them get away from us."
The contest stayed a one-possession affair until Jefferson hit a pair of buckets and a Corey Brewer layup gave the T'Wolves' their greatest lead to that point, 60-52, with five minutes left in the frame.
Moments later, a Maggette trey and an Al Thornton layup brought the Los Angeles Clippers within four, and after stopping Minnesota on its next possession, two free throws from Corey Maggette made it 66-64.
The clubs headed into the final 12 minutes of play with the T'Wolves ahead 68-66.
"We definitely started playing better the last couple of weeks," Jaric said. "The team has come together, we started playing as a team finally. Everyone gave a team effort."
